Disaster Education Coalition Goals
(Updated
May 6, 2004)
The National Disaster Education Coalition
focuses on raising public and media awareness about natural,
technological, and human-caused hazards, disaster preparedness,
and mitigation activities through public outreach and education
serving national, federal, state, and local audiences. The
Coalition has established the following goals:
- Cooperation
and sharing of information, support, and advice among participating
organizations.
- Dissemination
of consistent, accurate, and appropriate educational messages
regarding natural, technological, and human-caused hazards
and disaster preparedness, reflecting the latest research
and scientific information.
- Joint development
and delivery of educational materials through a variety
of media.
To realize these
goals, the members of NDEC work collaboratively on the following
activities:
- Periodically
reviewing materials to determine if they are accurate, if
they reach intended audiences, and if they adequately cover
the breadth of all types of natural, technological, and
human-caused hazards occurring in the United States and
its territories.
- Advising all
participating agencies of substantive information or factual
evidence that may result in necessary changes to existing
or new educational materials.
- Consulting with
appropriate sources before revising or creating materials
and ensuring all materials development is done in an open,
inclusive, and consensual manner.
- Encouraging
the availability of collaboratively developed materials
to the public and the media at no charge or for cost, as
nonrevenue generating products, and the distribution of
collaboratively-logoed materials by each agency or organization
whose logo appears on the item.
- Encouraging
development of materials and services in formats and methods
to meet changing audience needs.
- Sharing NDEC's
cooperative model with the international community and providing
information via the World Wide Web.
